FEBRUARY 2009 - Etienne Eichenberger and Maurice Machenbaum were among those who contributed to writing this essay on philanthropy. The work which explores the main principles of giving shows how anyone can give and the pleasure that results from intelligent giving.
At the initiative of Thierry Lombard who represents the sixth generation at the head of Lombard Odier, such prestigious authors as the Buddhist monk Matthieu Ricard and the Professor of Family Business John L. Ward joined together to present the various facets of the art of philanthropy in this easy to read short book. Available from the Family Business web site this book seeks to give some tips for a practical reflection on giving, especially in the context of the family business.
In a recently published review of the book, Philanthropy UK describes "Why Others?" as "A desk-friendly book exploring the ‘art of giving’ (...). The easy-to-digest, clearly written chapters (...), accompanied by insightful and distinctive cartoons by Gabs whose unique talent expresses the concepts and feelings that words cannot convey.".
The third in a series of books on the challenges of family values, succession and estates, "Why Others" deals more particularly with the perspective of philanthropic activity at an individual or family level. While many people fortunately have the desire to give, giving itself is only truly satisfying when it is done in a proactively, engaged way, more as a process of self fulfilment than a reactive approach.
“Studies have shown that, when it is spent on others, money can in fact buy happiness. (…) it has been proven that it is emotionally better to give than to receive.” Matthieu Ricard
