JANUARY 2010 - The renowned International Institute for Management Development (IMD) has invited wise to teach an optional two hours course on philanthropy. The course entitled « Responsible Leadership – An eye opener » lies within the program « Building on Talent – Developing the Next Generation of Leaders » (BOT).
First taught in June 2009, it is intended for ambitious young managers with a few years of experience and professionals willing to reflect on their career.
This is an opportunity for wise to enlighten influential individuals about the socio-political context of their activities, emphasizing the problems related to international human development. It is also an opportunity to remind them that the knowledge and skills acquired throughout their careers can be used not only in business but also to help others obtain a better life.
For a few days the participants are given the opportunity to personally get involved in a charity or social enterprise selected by wise, offering participants a structured and practical experience that will show both what others can bring to them and what they can give to others, in particular by giving advise on management and organisation.
“Such an adventure is worth living”, affirms Jack Wood, director of the BOT program at IMD. “Very often our students travel from one capital city to another, they rarely come out from the financial sector. ‘Responsible Leadership’ contributes to widen their horizon and helps them give more profoundness to their profession.”
Is it the responsibility of leaders to engage in philanthropy? Jack Wood does not pretend to go that far. “No, helping others through philanthropy or by any other means is a choice, it is simply a personal choice.”
